Personal Statement:“Imagine what one’s day would be like without math. Imagine what this world would be like without the existence of mathematics.” This is how I started my research paper on mathematics and its every day applications for my senior project, a graduation requirement, in my high school. My passion for mathematics developed for years in high school. From the beginning of the senior year, I started volunteering to work as a math tutor after school three days a week. Over time, the volunteer work seeded my interest in mathematics. When helping other students with their math problems, I really enjoyed what I was doing. The students’ need for help strongly motivated me to find every possible method that would give them a better and clearer understanding of a concept, a formula, or a particular problem in the book. Sometimes I did feel stressed out and frustrated on the job because I was not able to provide the students a decent explanation that they could easily understand. The more challenges I entered while tutoring, the stronger my enthusiasm for mathematics became. I love tutoring math as much as I love doing math.

Personal Statement:Words cannot describe how rewarding it is to be able to guide students through this bizarre language we like to call mathematics. But the fact of the matter is that math is a widely despised subject at all levels of education. Consequently, no other subject in our schools is afflicted with a lower level of competency – a reality that I’ve witnessed. I am passionate about teaching mathematics because for such a critically relevant subject, it has unjustly been burdened with a mysterious and dreadful stigma in our popular imagination. The “mysterious” nature of mathematics has taken the blame for low rates of mathematical competency in our schools for far too long. It is passion to become an exceptional math teacher (that this world has ever seen) and to change the face of mathematics education by making it a subject that students should not grow to hate but something they can do and even enjoy. Since 2003, I’ve worked with a very diverse set of students, from the elementary level to adult community college students, dealing with all levels of Algebra, Arithmetic, Geometry, Trigonometry, and up to the first few years of Calculus. In addition, I’ve taken math classes at UC Berkeley that focused on teaching mathematics at the middle and high school levels efficiently, accurately and clearly. In my experiences I’ve found tutoring math most successful when one can develop a rapport with the student. This has been no problem for me as I treat everyone I tutor as more than just a student. As a result, students have found sessions with me enjoyable and see the material from a much clearer and understandable perspective. Anyone would agree that good education should be available to all who seek it, regardless of their personal history or socioeconomic circumstances. I’ve made it my mission to change the unfortunate tendency of low mathematical competency by bringing my passion for teaching mathematics to those that need it the most. My intelligence, undying dedication, understanding, patience, experience and strong sense of responsibility, in addition to providing a fun, engaging, and more importantly encouraging style to teaching mathematics make me the ideal candidate as a mathematics tutor and aspiring mathematics teacher.

Education: B.A. ANTHROPOLOGY UCSC 2008
Courses:GENERAL BIOLOGY, ANATOMY/PHYSIOLOGY, ANIMAL ANATOMY, EVOLUTION, IMMUNOLOGY, READING, ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE(ESL), GEOGRAPHY, US HISTORY, WORLD HISTORY, SPEECH/PUBLIC SPEAKING
Personal Statement:After graduating from UC Santa Cruz in 2008 with a degree in cultural anthropology, I moved to Rayong, Thailand where I worked as an English teacher in order to gain experience and education in a different culture. As an English teacher, I taught students age seven to late forties. My position as an English teacher enabled me to provide my students with an opportunity to use their newly acquired English as a confidence builder. I spent time in and outside of the classroom carefully preparing lessons that allowed me to break down complicated grammar concepts into simple examples that my young students could grasp. I paid close attention to the different abilities among my students and tailored my lessons to encompass the needs of as many students as possible. I created activities to maintain the interest of high-level students without intimidating less skilled English speakers. I am interested in becoming your tutor because I would like to take the skills that I have gained abroad and continue to develop my teaching skills in the local community.
